Presently in Bharat (India), New Year is being celebrated on 1st January as per the Western calendar. Celebration on the eve of the Western New Year includes a lot of partying, eve teasing, drinking, etc. According to the Hindu scriptures, the date on which Chaitra Shuddha Pratipada as per the Hindu lunar calendar falls, this day is considered glorious in all ways - as per the cycle of Nature and it also has historical and spiritual significance. So, to ensure that the beginning of the New Year begins on an auspicious note, the Maharashtrians of India celebrate this Gudi Padwa day in a traditional way prescribed in the Hindu scriptures.
