| This is one party that will go on all through the night. Lord Shiva is known as the Creator, Preserver and Destroyer and each new moon is dedicated to Him.
Once, Parvatiji asked Lord Shiva as to which Vrata was the best in terms of gaining maximum punyas and bhakti to make Him one's best friend. So Lord Shiva himself told Her about this auspicious day.
* Parvati performed tapas, prayed, and meditated on this day to ward off any evil that might befall her husband on the moonless night.
* On this day, Lord Shiva celebrates his wedding anniversary with Sati, the mother divine.
* On this day there was also supposed to have been the marriage of Lord Shiva with Adi
Shakti.
* The new moon night represents evil, injustice, ignorance, sin, violence, and misfortune. Shiva
(symbolised by the new moon) appeared on this night to save the world from darkness and ignorance.
* Mahashivratri being a moonless night, people worship the God who wears the crescent moon as an adornment in his hair and that is Shiva. This was probably to ensure that the moon rose the next night.
* Mahashivratri is especially important, as it is on this night that Shiva danced the
'Tandav', his cosmic dance.
